Victory Baptist Church of Sherwood Park was established in May of 1980 as a church planting endeavour. Pastor Dave Harness and his family moved to Sherwood Park and began knocking on doors and holding services. From the onset the goal was to be an evangelistic, Bible-based church. The church met in a few different locations and in 1992 purchased 9.5 acres of land. In April of 2000 we dedicated our current building which was built with volunteer labour.
Victory Baptist Church is independent; we are not affiliated with a denomination or convention but we do fellowship with other churches of like faith and order. We are fundamental – holding to and defending the historic foundational truths of the Christian faith. We use only the King James Bible (AV 1611) and sing the traditional hymns of the faith. Further, we are Baptist - believing and practicing the historic and Biblical distinctives of Baptists such as: The Bible is our final authority in faith and practice; salvation by faith through grace alone; baptism of believers by immersion; autonomy of the local church; priesthood of all believers; and separation of church and state. Finally, we are evangelistic; we seek to faithfully preach the Gospel to the lost at home and those abroad through missionary outreach. Our ultimate purpose is to be to the praise and glory of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:12, 14 and 3:21).
The vision of Victory Baptist is worldwide. We believe in taking the Great Commission literally. Church planting is the key to effective world evangelism. We have sent out families from our church to start churches: New Testament Baptist Church in Edmonton, Lakeside Baptist Church in Cold Lake, Mountain View Baptist Church in Olds, and Hinton Baptist Church in Hinton, Alberta. Several other members have been trained, sent out, and are now serving in other churches. We currently support over 30 missionaries and ministries throughout the world.
